This week, a boat race in Monaco may have launched a new World Championship Series. An off-road racing team confirmed its entry into the world’s first Hydrogen World Cup. And South Korea put a hydrogen-powered excavator to work on a real construction site.

Before we get into the news, here’s a quick update on our own progress. Our Thermal Loop engineering test unit is under construction, and we’re working with New Cube Energy to evaluate using heat from their next-generation nuclear reactor to power Thermal Loop and lower the cost of producing clean hydrogen. First up, the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge just wrapped up its 13th edition, with more than 50 teams from over 20 countries competing with hydrogen, electric, and methanol power. Right after the race, organizers announced a full World Series, expanding the competition from Italy to Australia starting in 2027.
The first qualifier runs on Lake Como next April, backed by the Alessandro Volta Foundation, and a second qualifier launches in Darwin, Australia, giving Asia-Pacific teams a direct route to the grand final. Only two teams per country will advance to Monaco for the world final. That’s the shift from a student showcase to the early stages of a real racing circuit, with a structure built to grow every single year.
Next, Veloce Racing has confirmed its return to the 2026 Extreme H World Cup, the hydrogen-powered off-road series now competing at full FIA World Championship level. Veloce built its name in Extreme E with five race wins and nine podiums before that series wound down in 2024.
And now it’s bringing that pedigree to hydrogen. The championship heads to Qiddiya City, Saudi Arabia, from August 29 through 31, where eight teams will race across three disciplines before an eight-car, winner-take-all final.
Motorsport has a long history of proving out fuel technology under conditions no production vehicle ever will face. A championship built entirely around hydrogen, backed by serious racing teams, tells you the fuel is ready for a real fight.
Last story for today: South Korea has put a 14-ton hydrogen-powered excavator to work on real construction sites in Ulsan as part of a four-year, 16.6 billion won national program. Instead of a pressurized tank, it stores hydrogen in a solid state using metal alloys that absorb hydrogen and release it on demand at under one-seventh the pressure of a typical fuel-cell vehicle. That cuts the cost of building refueling infrastructure by roughly 80%.
The machine runs a full 12-hour shift and puts out nothing but water vapor. The program plans to log over 2,000 hours of real operating data on fuel efficiency, breakdowns, and safety before deciding how to commercialize it.
It’s a small machine, but it’s the kind of unglamorous, practical deployment that tends to actually scale. From racehorses to job sites, hydrogen keeps showing up in places that demand real performance, not just good intentions.
What’s still unresolved is the cost of producing it cleanly at scale. That’s exactly the problem Thermal Loop is being built to solve.
